Temporary Work (Skilled) visa - subclass 457

This visa lets a skilled worker travel to Australia to work in their nominated occupation for their approved sponsor for up to four years.

Who can apply for a 457 visa?

You might be able to get this visa if:

• you have been sponsored by an approved business and

• you have required skills to fill a position nominated by an approved business

Steps for applying for 457

1. Sponsorship: The employer applies for approval as a standard business sponsor.

2. Nomination: The employer nominates an overseas worker to fill a position in there business.

3. Visa application: The person nominated to work applies for the 457 visa.

457 visa holders can:

• work in Australia for a period of between one day and four years

• change employer, providing the new employer is an approved sponsor

• bring any eligible family members, who can work and study, with them to Australia

• travel in and out of Australia as often as they like

What happens next?

After two years work on a 457 with your sponsoring employer, you can use the ‘transitional stream’ as a pathway to a permanent residence visa in Australia.
